Use the upcoming Justice Bill to close the loophole that allows PSNI officers to resign when investigated over misconduct.
Why is this important?
Last week, the Belfast Telegraph reported that three PSNI officers charged with domestic violence offences in recent years quietly resigned from the force while under investigation for misconduct. This means they face no consequences for what they’ve done.
That’s because there is a loophole where officers can resign or take early retirement to stop these investigations. But it doesn’t have to be this way. This loophole doesn’t exist in England and Wales - and Scotland is set to change the rules very soon.
PSNI officers should not be able to stop investigations over their misconduct. We call on Justice Minister Naomi Long to close this loophole by adding amendments to her upcoming Justice Bill.
